Amish Paste Tomato

The Amish Paste Tomato gained popularity in the 1980s, but is believed to have been cultivated in one of the oldest Amish communities as early as the 1870s. This variety is quite large, weighing between 170g and 340g, and has a teardrop shape. Its thick skin offers protection from the tomato caterpillar. It is coreless and possesses a deep, sweet flavour, making it ideal for cooking into a paste. Due to its low water content, it can also be used as a slicing tomato. Each plant can yield around 15kg of fruit, so be sure to get your pickling bottles ready!

Rocco's Paste Tomato

Rocco’s Paste Tomato was brought over to Australia in the 1950s by Rocco ‘Roy’ Violi from his hometown of Plati, in Reggio Calabria. In 1969, Roy settled in Canberra where he spent his life as the head cook at the Canberra Royal Hospital, growing a family and the now famous Rocco Paste Tomato. He cultivated it for more than 50 years in Canberra until he passed. This seed was gifted to us to keep Rocco’s legacy alive.  After only two seasons with his Passata tomato, it produces a fruit somewhere between our San Marzano and our Roma. It is best used for cooking and paste.

Roma Tomato

Roma Tomatoes are egg-shaped Tomatoes that are well known as being the most versatile variety, perfect for cooking, salads or drying. Each fruit is around 70 grams and is formed on a large bush. Roma’s will ripen all at once, in waves, which makes them the perfect choice if you are planning to make passata. It is a determinate Tomato, so it won’t grow too tall.

Like all Bombay Seed Traders varieties, it will produce fruit fast, in 75 -80 days, which makes it a perfect Tomato to grow in our unpredictable highland climate. Plant early in Spring and enjoy Tomatoes at Christmas.

San Marzano Tomato

The San Marzano has been grown in the volcanic soil of Mount Vesuvius near Naples since the 1770s. It is said to be the only Tomato to be used on a true Neapolitan Pizza.

The San Marzano has been our most productive and reliable variety for more than a decade. We were surprised when we introduced it to Braidwood, as it was unfamiliar to Tomato growers. But now they all know and grow the San Marzano.

They have a sweet, intense tomato flavour with the right amount of acid for passata. Each tomato weighs 110 grams, with around five elegant fruits in a trellis. The best reason for choosing a San Marzano is for the yield of around 17 kg per plant. That’s a lot of passata.

Tigerella Tomato

Tigerella Tomatoes are named for their orange and red striped skin when ripened. We include the Tigerella in our salad tomato, although it is larger than our other cherry tomatoes at 5cm in diameter and could easily be sliced into a tomato or roasted with a big breakfast. They have a sweet flavour and are prolific producers on an indeterminate bush.
