Community Supported Agriculture
Pilot Program
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) started in Japan, in the 1970s. An observant group of Market Shoppers noticed that ‘the Farmers’ at the local Farmer Markets would come and go. Some years the Farmers Markets were bustling and others the numbers of stalls would drop and in turn, so would the number of shoppers.
When they consulted with the Farmers about what was going wrong with the Market, the Farmers explained their predicament,
“Sometimes, the seasons are favourable and sometimes they are not”
“for any given market we produce more than the customer needs to ensure there is enough food for everyone, only to throw it into the compost after the market”
Farmers hold all the risk and with that a lot of wasted energy, resources and time, riding seasonal income. With one bad season a Farmer can decide to chase a more stable income. And where does that leave the food chain, the local Farmers Market and your dinner table?
The local Market Shoppers went around to the Farmers and asked if they could pay a subscription style model for them to produce food to help them ride the seasonal income waves and produce food all year round.
Since that simple system showing support for farmers, there have been many successful styles of CSA established all over the world.
Our system is simply seasonal and not a subscription, because our seedling growing season is only long enough to get your garden started.
This CSA started as a suggestion to reduce the need to chase us around the markets on weekends. Sure, you could stop in at one of our growing stockists, during business hours, but home delivery sounded better.
There are a lot of things one can easily create in the 21st century, but time isn’t one of them. Reducing our waste will save us a lot of time and resources. If you assist us to grow only what is needed especially for you, we will pass on the benefits.
You will enjoy the first pick of new season seedlings, get to trial new varieties, delivered right to your door. You will receive discounts and special offers, priority invites to events and workshops, and all the ‘good oil’ we can share.
This is our pilot program, so we may experience some teething problems. Your feedback on all aspects of this program is essential.
We would like to thank you as we work together to build a new way.
